Bookmarks

Most people use the Favourites function of their web browser to store their bookmarks. This is fine as far as it goes, but as one's use of the internet (or intranet) increases, the deficiencies of the favourites stored on a local machine become rapidly evident, and desire grows for more functionality. A short list of the problems with the standard Favourites function is:

  • Favourites are fine if you are using your computer. As soon as you use another, then all your bookmarks are lost.
  • As soon as you change your browser or machine, you risk losing your favourites.
  • The Favourites folder treats all links as equally important. I find that some sites I want to look at every day, others I will only look at once a week or month and some even more rarely yet in the Favourites folder they are listed in alphabetical order.

This application allows you to store your favourites on a server on the internet, so they are no longer bound to a specific machine. It also allows you to set up a schedule for each bookmark. As you log in each day, all bookmarks that you might need daily are at the top of the list, coloured in green. Other bookmarks that you have scheduled to view are coloured in red. The remainder of your bookmarks are listed below these and coloured in white. As you view a scheduled bookmark, you mark it as seen and when you update the page the bookmark is re-scheduled.

Functions are available to create new bookmarks, and to search for existing bookmarks.

Keeping your bookmarks off your machine and on a central server allows you to access them from any machine attached to the internet.

This program allows you to set up a schedule for viewing internet sites.
